Frequently Asked Questions
-
When will the skatepark be built?
We are making great progress toward building the skatepark! We have secured a design partner and through events and the amazing support of local businesses and community members like you, we have raised over $25,000 so far. The timeline for construction depends on reaching our fundraising goals, as we continue to seek grants, donations, and community support. Skateparks generally take about three years to create due to the amount of public support, funds, and planning involved.
-
How is the skatepark being funded?
The skatepark is being funded through grants, donations, sponsorships, and community fundraising events. Behind the scenes, TLSP’s board is actively researching grant opportunities, meeting with potential sponsors, and organizing events to raise the necessary funds. Every contribution, big or small, brings us one step closer to making the skatepark a reality.
-
Is TLSP a nonprofit organization?
Yes! Twin Lakes Skatepark Project (TLSP) is a registered nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing a public skatepark to our community. This means all donations go directly toward funding the skatepark and are tax-deductible.
-
Who is responsible for maintaining the skatepark?
The maintenance of the skatepark will be a collaborative effort between the city, county, and TLSP. While the city and county will manage general upkeep, TLSP’s mission includes ongoing maintenance and advocacy for the park even after construction. We are committed to ensuring the park remains a vibrant and well-maintained space for the community for years to come.
-
How does TLSP decide on park design and features?
TLSP has partnered with a renowned design and construction firm, Hunger Skateparks, to ensure the skatepark meets the needs of the community. The design process is guided by input from local skaters, enthusiasts, and residents. We are currently running a community design input survey, which allows everyone to share their ideas and preferences. The survey will be open until March 14, so be sure to participate and help shape the future of the park!
-
Why do you need so much money?
Building a high-quality, durable skatepark requires a significant investment. Funds are needed for site preparation, construction materials, professional design services, and long-term maintenance. While previous attempts to establish a skatepark in Grayson County faced challenges due to limited funding, we’ve learned valuable lessons from those experiences. This time, we are committed to ensuring the park is built to the highest standards, providing a lasting resource for the community. Every dollar raised helps make this vision a reality.
-
Won’t a skatepark attract graffiti and vandalism?
While it’s true that some public spaces can attract graffiti, studies show that when communities feel a sense of ownership and pride in a space, they are less likely to deface it. By involving local artists and residents in the park’s design, including murals and creative elements, we can help foster a positive relationship with the space. Additionally, regular maintenance and community engagement will ensure the skatepark remains well-kept and respected by all who use it. Our goal is to create a space where the community feels responsible for its upkeep and preservation.
-
Won’t a skatepark create liability for the city and county?
While concerns about liability are understandable, having a dedicated skatepark actually reduces the risk of injury compared to street skating. Skateparks are specifically designed to provide a safe environment for skaters, with features that reduce hazards found in public spaces. Additionally, Kentucky Revised Statutes (KRS) 411.190 offers liability protection to property owners, including municipalities, for injuries that occur while individuals are using recreational facilities like skateparks. This statute encourages cities and counties to create safe spaces for recreation without the fear of excessive liability.
-
Won’t a skatepark just be used by a small group of people and not benefit the whole community?
While the skatepark will mainly serve action sports enthusiasts, it will benefit the whole community by providing a safe space for recreation, reducing risky street skating, and offering opportunities for local events and businesses. It promotes physical activity, community engagement, and creates an inclusive space for everyone to enjoy.
-
Won’t a skatepark make the area less safe for kids or families?
The skatepark will actually create a safer environment for skaters and riders by providing a designated space for them to enjoy their sports, reducing the risk of accidents in public areas. With proper design and safety measures, such as clear rules, maintenance, and supervision, the skatepark will be a safe, welcoming space for all ages, including families.
-
How much will this skate park cost me?
Nothing! The skatepark will be free to use once it’s built. It’s being funded through donations, grants, and sponsorships, so there are no costs for you to enjoy it. Your only contribution, if you choose, would be supporting the project through donations or attending community events. The goal is to create a space that’s accessible to everyone without any fees or charges.
-
What happens if the skatepark gets damaged or needs repairs?
TLSP is committed to ensuring the skatepark remains in great condition for years to come. The ongoing maintenance and repair of the skatepark will be a shared responsibility between TLSP and the local government through our partnership. In the event of damage, TLSP will work with the city/county to address repairs as quickly as possible. Additionally, we will seek community support and donations to help cover any unexpected repair costs. Regular inspections will be conducted to ensure the park remains safe and well-maintained for all users.
-
Will helmets and pads be required?
Safety is a top priority, and while the specific rules will be finalized closer to the park’s opening, we strongly encourage all users to wear helmets and protective gear like pads while using the skatepark. Many skateparks require helmets by law, and wearing safety gear greatly reduces the risk of injury. We’ll provide clear guidelines and signage at the park to ensure everyone stays safe while enjoying the space. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, and we want everyone to have fun while staying protected!
-
Who can use the skatepark? Can BMX, scooters, or rollerbladers use the skatepark?
The skatepark will be open to everyone! Skaters, BMX riders, scooter enthusiasts, rollerbladers, and even WCMX (Wheelchair Motocross) athletes are all welcome. We are designing the park with features that accommodate a wide range of wheeled extreme sports, ensuring a fun and safe space for everyone to enjoy, regardless of their preferred sport or skill level. The goal is to create an inclusive environment where all action sports participants can come together and share the space.
